Stam is a high-tech consulting engineering company, based in Genoa, that provides support to clients facing new business and technology challenges, across four main industrial domains, namely: Space and Defence; Security, Transport and Logistics; Industry 4.0 and Automation; Energy, Circular Economy and Sustainability.

The company was founded in 1997, thanks to seed funding provided by the European Space Agency (ESA) Technology Transfer Programme, to develop an innovative gearbox system. Since then, the company has successfully collaborated within ESA programmes, developing devices for soil investigation, hermetic sealing systems, test rigs, and technologies for the active removal of space debris. Stam is currently ESA Technology Broker for Italy, and contributing to the commercial exploitation of Space Rider in the pharma and biotech fields, and working on the development of circular economy solutions for waste management onboard the ISS. Franco Malerba, Italy’s first astronaut, is our Scientific Advisor and Business Coach.

In the defence sector, Stam contributes to projects in the field of command and control systems, maritime surveillance, anti-drone systems, advanced simulation, cybersecurity, CBRN technologies, in particular within the European Defence Programmes (EDIDP and EDF) and EDA, collaborating with major EU players in this field.

Stam has been very active in technology transfer and dual-use technology development and operates today in a broad range of sectors beyond space and defence. For instance, the company has been developing solutions for risk assessment and resilience against terrorist threats and attacks in a wide range of application scenarios including critical infrastructures and soft targets.

Stam has been strongly committed to improve its products and foster its know-how and has matured more than twenty years of experience in international collaborative R&D projects, in particular those funded by the European Commission within its Framework Programmes for Research and Innovation.

Stam is a member of the following clusters and institutions:

  • START 4.0, the Italian Competence Centre for the Security and Optimization of Strategic Infrastructures, funded by the Ministry of Economic Development.
  • CBRN-P3, the Italian technological, industrial and institutional cluster focused on prevention and protection of the citizens and the environment from CBRN threats.
  • CTNA, the Italian Technological Aerospace Cluster.
  • Istituto Affari Internazionali, a non-profit think tank focused on international issues in defence, security, economy and foreign affairs.
  • SIIT, the Ligurian technological cluster focused on integrated smart systems.

Stam has been appointed as a member of the DG DEFIS Expert Group on policies and programmes relevant to the EU Space, Defence and Aeronautics industry. Stam is also a member of the EDA CapTechs “Energy & Environment” and “Experimentation, System of Systems, Battlelab and Modelling & Simulation”. The company staff are also involved in the EDA Incubation Forum for Circular Economy in European Defence (IF CEED) and in the NATO C-UAS Technical Standardization Subgroup.
