A History of Excellence

Specialized in ITAR  Free solutions for military navigation, Northrop Grumman Italy is the Italian subsidiary of Northrop Grumman Mission System Europe, and  in Pomezia (Rome) design and produce a wide range of   navigation and stabilization system  for Air-Lad-Space Domain

Its foundation as Litton Italia took place in Rome in 1961 for the construction of the inertial navigation system of the Italian Air Force F-104 Starfighter, in compliance with international industrial offset agreements.

The activities began with the construction, assembly and repair of the LN -3 inertial platform, and since then were carried out in an industrial plant in Pomezia.

In the early 70s, as proof of the power conferred, Litton Italia was awarded the privilege to designing and develop the Attitude Heading Reference System (AHRS) for the Tornado Aircraft.

Over the years the company has grown and matured to develop a large capacity and know-how that are now at the forefront in the industry and which enabled it to carry out most of the inertial navigation systems for major aircraft and military helicopters Italian.

Since then, Northrop Grumman Italy has increased its area of expertise and is recognized as an industry leader in the field of military navigation. Enough to remember, among his greatest successes, the Eurofighter Typhoon program – now in its Tranche 3 – or the EH-101 helicopter, or even the ‘AM-X in all versions of Italian and Brazilian, and then the ‘UH -60 Black Hawk, and among the latest hits, the Alenia Aermacchi M-346. This is just to name a few and not to say of the programs still in the development phase.

For this reason, in fact, to design systems that can provide navigation data with increasing accuracy, Northrop Grumman Italy has long been involved in the study of Navigation data derived from purely inertial sensors (gyroscopes and accelerometers) with data generated by other sensors, such as Magnetic Sensors Unit, Air data Computer, Radar Altimeter, Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS).

Since the beginning of GPS satellite navigation, appeared clearly the enormous advantages of integration between narrow inertial navigation and satellite navigation, so much so that in 1988 he was made a first prototype of the integrated inertial / GPS for which has developed a specific Kalman filter.

So, many navigation systems manufactured by Northrop Grumman Italian to integrate their internal GNSS various types, Navstar, GLONAS, SAASM, SPS, including the ability SBAS and already prepared for the next European satellite system Galileo.

Expertise

The Northrop Grumman Italy expertise, ranging from development to production of inertial navigation systems and electronic systems, used in aerospace applications, avionics, land, and maritime missile in all the military applications. The development and production include both the research , design and implementation of experimental models and prototypical demonstration, manufacturing, assembly, integration and testing of production units . In addition, Northrop Grumman Italian designs and manufactures all the electronic equipment necessary for inertial systems testing as well as all additional equipment and complementary parts . The skills also extend to maintenance, repair, calibration, training and logistical support for the use of navigation equipment and related parts .

The great know-how in dealing with the inertial sensor technologies, expertise in software development and experience in designing both mechanical and electronic, are the basis of the success of Northrop Grumman on the Italian market.

It is increasingly consolidated the area of real-time simulation of inertial products that allows you to analyze the dynamic behavior of systems in the face of motion trajectories and thus to verify, at an early stage of product development, the necessary responsiveness to different operational requirements of the aircraft (or vehicle) .

Decades of experience in the field have made it possible to Northrop Grumman Italy to specialize in providing navigation solutions “turnkey ” applications for both aerial and marine or terrestrial, with a particular focus on ensuring the safety of the operator and the reliability of its systems.
