QTI s.r.l. (Quantum Telecommunications Italy) is the first Italian Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) company, providing industrial-grade systems and products for quantum networks.
Based in Florence, QTI s.r.l. is an innovative start-up founded in October 2020 by a group of entrepreneurs, scientists and researchers working with the National Institute of Optics of the National Research Council (CNR-INO). The company engineers, develops and manufactures complex telecommunication network architectures based on QKD, with the vision of spreading the use of quantum technologies in industry, government, and defence sectors to guarantee the ultimate security of digital communications.
In 2021, Telsy S.p.A, the cybersecurity and cryptographic competence centre of the TIM Group, acquired part of QTI company’s shares. The partnership between QTI and Telsy enables the seamless integration of QTI’s QKD system with Telsy’s encryptors. The positioning of this partnership within the TIM Group also provides a privileged window for the implementation of QTI-Telsy solutions on the national telecommunications network.
Since its foundation, QTI has contributed with its experts to important tests, demonstrations, and the implementation of QKD at the national and European levels. Among others, QTI contributed to the field trial of a three-state Quantum Key Distribution scheme in the metropolitan area of Florence, as part of the Italian Quantum Backbone. In August 2021, QTI experts supported the realisation of the first public demonstration of an intergovernmental quantum communication between three nodes (Trieste, Ljubljana and Rijeka), during the G20 Digital Ministers’ Meeting. QTI is also a QKD systems provider in the establishment of the Italian and a number of EU Member States’ quantum communication networks within the EuroQCI project led by the European Commission.
TECHNOLOGY OVERVIEW
Present-day public-key cryptography is believed to offer security against an eavesdropper equipped with a powerful conventional computer. However, the length of the keys must be continuously increased to keep up with advancing technology, leading to inefficiency in the execution of the algorithms.
The discovery of quantum algorithms speeding up the solution of complex problems has prompted recent work to redefine the security assumptions of public-key cryptography.
QKD is a physical layer method that allows future-proof data encryption, exhibiting a secure way of distributing random keys between distant users. Such secret keys can be used by existing cypher machines to guarantee the ultimate security of digital communication.
PRODUCTS
Quell-X
Quell-X is a complete QKD system consisting of an Alice unit and a Bob unit capable of generating quantum keys for ultra-secure communications. The security of the keys is ensured by the laws of quantum mechanics, which allow to identify any attempt to intercept information in the communication channel.
QKME
The Key Management Entity (KME) is a state-of-the-art network device capable of performing secure key storage and distribution according to the latest standards. The QKME ensures compatibility and interoperability between different systems and infrastructures in complex networks.
QSDN
The QSDN solution combines the unconditional security of QKD with the benefits of Software Defined Network (SDN). Based on the ETSI GS QKD 015 standard, it enables dynamic and optimised configuration of QKD links in complex networks.
